What's new

Changes to Snow Day Chance, newest first.

  1. A new prediction engine

    • We rebuilt the engine behind every snow day chance and tested it against real closure decisions from past winters, district by district. See how accurate it is.
    • Far fewer false alarms: in those tests the old engine called for a snow day more than twice as often as schools actually closed.
    • Chances that mostly track what happens: in the same tests, the share of nights that ended in a snow day stayed near the chance shown, and the accuracy page shows where it didn't.
    • Chances for the next few school days, not only tomorrow.
    • Delay chances checked against real school records, and early dismissal chances that show up far less often. Early dismissals are rare and seldom recorded, so that number stays a rough guide.
    • Environment Canada weather alerts now appear for Canadian locations.
  2. Every district and school

    • Pages for more than 140,000 schools and school districts in the US and Canada, each with its own snow day chance.
    • Canadian school boards, with their own pages.
    • The National Weather Service renamed its cold weather alerts in late 2024. Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings now count the same way the old names did.
    • Steadier during big storms, when everyone checks at once.
  3. Sharing and faster pages

    • Share your prediction straight from the result card, or copy a link to it.
    • Faster city, state and province pages.
    • Pages no longer jump around while they load.
  4. The first version

    • Snow day chances for any US or Canadian location, by zip code, postal code or place name.
    • Forecasts and winter weather alerts from the National Weather Service for US locations.
    • Search across more than 225,000 places in the US and Canada.
    • A privacy policy: no accounts, and no personal information collected.
