Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 6, 2026

Snow Day Chance (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website at www.snowdaychance.com (the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use our snow day calculator, how that information is used, and the choices you have.

By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Information We Collect

Snow Day Chance is designed to work without user accounts, logins, or personal profiles. We do not ask you for your name, email address, phone number, or any other personally identifiable information. The limited data we process falls into the following categories:

a. Location Information

To generate a snow day prediction, you provide a location, either by typing a zip code, city name, or address, or by granting your browser permission to share your current geographic coordinates. This location data is used solely to retrieve weather forecasts for your area and is not stored on our servers after the request is complete.

b. Calculator Inputs

You may select options such as school type (public, private, or college), area type, road priority, and other advanced settings. These inputs are processed in real time to calculate your snow day probability and are not stored or associated with any identifying information.

c. Automatically Collected Data

When you visit our site, certain technical information is collected automatically through Google Analytics and standard web server logs. This may include:

  • IP address (anonymized by Google Analytics)
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Referring URL
  • Pages visited and time spent on each page
  • Device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)
  • General geographic region (derived from IP address)

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information described above to:

  • Provide snow day predictions based on your location and preferences
  • Retrieve real-time weather forecast data from third-party weather services
  • Analyze usage patterns and improve the accuracy and usability of the Service
  • Monitor site performance and troubleshoot technical issues
  • Understand aggregate traffic trends (which regions use the Service most, etc.)

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, automated decision-making, or any purpose other than operating and improving the Service.

3. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on the following third-party services to function. Each service receives only the minimum data necessary to fulfill its purpose:

a. Open-Meteo (Weather Data)

We send your location coordinates (latitude and longitude) to the Open-Meteo API to retrieve weather forecast data. Open-Meteo is a free, open-source weather API. No personally identifiable information is sent beyond the geographic coordinates. See Open-Meteo's terms for details.

b. Nominatim / OpenStreetMap (Geocoding)

When you search for a location by name or zip code, we use the Nominatim geocoding service (powered by OpenStreetMap) to convert your search query into geographic coordinates. Nominatim receives your search text and your IP address as part of the standard HTTP request. See OpenStreetMap Foundation's privacy policy for details.

c. Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the Service. Google Analytics collects information such as how often you visit, which pages you view, and what interactions you perform (e.g., calculating a prediction). This data is aggregated and does not personally identify you. Google may use cookies to distinguish unique visitors. See Google's privacy policy and opt-out options for details.

d. Vercel (Hosting)

The Service is hosted on Vercel. Vercel may collect standard server logs including IP addresses, request timestamps, and user agent strings as part of its hosting infrastructure. See Vercel's privacy policy for details.

4. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

The Service itself does not set any first-party cookies. However, Google Analytics may set cookies (such as _ga and _ga_*) to distinguish unique visitors and track session information. These are third-party cookies governed by Google's policies.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. You can also opt out of Google Analytics entirely by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Disabling cookies will not affect the core functionality of the snow day calculator.

5. Data Retention

We do not maintain any database of user data. Location inputs and calculator preferences are processed in real time and discarded once the response is delivered. We do not store your location history, prediction results, or any other user-submitted data on our servers.

Google Analytics retains aggregated usage data according to Google's standard retention policies. Vercel server logs are retained according to Vercel's standard log retention schedule.

6. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise share your personal information with third parties for their marketing or commercial purposes. Data is shared only with the third-party services listed in Section 3 above, and only to the extent necessary to operate the Service.

We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal process (e.g., a court order or subpoena).

7. Children’s Privacy

The Service is a general-audience tool intended to provide weather-based school closure predictions. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. Because the Service does not require accounts, logins, or the submission of personal details, children can use the calculator without providing any personally identifiable information.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information to us, please contact us at privacy@snowdaychance.com and we will take steps to remove it.

8. Your Choices and Rights

You have the following choices regarding your data:

  • Location access: You can deny or revoke browser geolocation permission at any time through your browser settings. You can always use the calculator by typing a zip code instead.
  • Google Analytics: You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the browser opt-out add-on or by using a browser extension that blocks tracking scripts.
  • Cookies: You can clear or block cookies through your browser's privacy settings.

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction that grants data protection rights, you may have additional rights including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data. Because we do not store identifiable personal data, these rights are largely fulfilled by default. If you have questions or concerns, contact us at privacy@snowdaychance.com.

9. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the information processed through the Service, including encrypted HTTPS connections for all traffic, server-side request validation, and CORS policies that restrict API access to our domain. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
